What does Giant's Foot Surf provide?
We provide everything you will need including: airport pick up and drop off; comfortable rooms, hammocks, and surroundings; great food and drinks, ping pong, horseshoes, a friendly game of poker or scrabble; two Pangas; and most importantly good people with local knowledge. Take a look at the surfing, and lodgings pages.
What other non-surf activities are available during our stay?
There are plenty of activities to do in Nicaragua other than surf. The only issues are time and energy. If you'll be staying with us for a bit longer than one week or if you just want to get out of the sun for a few days there are canopies to tour, volcanoes to climb,
markets to peruse, colonial towns to explore and a full calendar of cultural events like bullfights and horse parade/street parties known as "Hipica's." If the waves are flat but you still want to get wet you can fish, snorkel, or free dive. Check the Nicaragua page to get an idea of what the country has to offer.
What are your rates?
The rate for our Surf Tour is $1050 per person, per week. There is a 10% discount for groups that reserve and confirm their trip more than 3 months in advance with a half-down deposit. What types of rooms are available?
We have double occupancy and couples rooms all equipped with A.C., private bathrooms, fans, and new mattresses.
What is the best time of year to come?
The Giant's Foot Surf tour season officially runs from March 17th through September 15th . Off season surf tour bookings are occasionally accepted. The months of December through March are dry and windy. Beginning in May or June through October we get tropical squalls several times a week. In September or October the rains pick up a bit for a few weeks which is the warning that the wet season is nearly finished. The times that onshore winds are a real possibility are in early june, late september - october, and when there is significant storm activity (i.e. hurricanes) in the Caribbean and/or Atlantic.
Nicaragua is exposed to pretty much all southern swells. This wide angle of swell window guarantees a lot of waves throughout much of the year. South swells are liable to show up at any time of year, but there is a considerable increase in the power and frequency of swells starting in April. This roughly corresponds to the wet season and
the slackening of the offshore winds, which can at times make dropping into the wave face a bit tough. Southern swells particularly belt the coast with waves from May through October.
Does the surf camp include surfing instruction?
Does your rate include surfboard rentals?
No our rate does NOT include surfboard rentals, but we do offer board rentals and occasionally loaners in the case that you break your own board, or your quiver just isn't working for you.
Is it safe to travel in Nicaragua?
Nicaragua is about as mellow and safe a country as any in the world, and statistically it is the safest in Central America. With over a decade of political stability under her belt, Nicaragua is receiving more and more international travelers every year. The world is re-discovering this amazing country but it is still very much off the beaten path. Giant's foot surf is located in a rural fishing village where we know most people and we have never had a problem.
Is it safe to mail a check down there ?
Yes, we receive all payments by mail, in the form of personal checks. We do this because it is the easiest method for us. Pay pal does not serve the country and Nicaragua's credit card infrastructure is questionable and expensive. To cash a check in foreign currency in Nicaragua, you must provide several forms of I. D., have a bank account, and three letters of reference that the bank keeps on record. After all that, it takes 21 days for the funds to clear while it goes through the international banking routes. It is almost impossible for anyone other than the payee indicated on the check to cash a personal check in Nicaragua. Banks will not even cash travelers checks. Online transactions, and credit card transactions are arguably less secure. So, yes, sending a personal check by mail is a safe process. It is just that, like many things down south, it moves a little slower.
What do I need to bring?
Take a look at our printable packing list to get an idea.
What are the health and vaccination issues?
Center For Disease Control recommends Hepatitis A, Tetanus, & Typhoid vaccinations. Visit the Site for the latest information. Contact us if you're concerned, but health has not been a major issue for our guests.
How do I make reservations?
Is it cool to bring my kids with me?
Yes, minors are more than welcome at Giant's Foot Surf, however we will not be responsible for their supervision (unless they're unusually cute).
What if we just want a place to stay?
We welcome all guests within reason.
