So...you want to work for

Giant's Foot Surf
Nicaragua?

Well, its not easy living on a deserted beach in a very small, and very rural fishing village. It is far away from the hustle and bustle and there is nothing to do but swim, surf, read, have a few cold ones, watch a movie, or play some games. It can wear on you over time and not everyone is cut out for Nicaraguan Surf Camp living...still interested? Then read on...

Who we are looking for

Giant's Foot Surf Nicaragua takes on new team members year-round for both short and long term contracts. Our employment season is from February to October. All positions include full room and board and surfing opportunities. The ability to drive stick and some spanish is highly desirable, as well as Hepatitis A and tetanus vaccinations.

Skills in areas such as construction, first aid, music, yoga, mechanics, photography, boating, education, cooking, fishing, fiberglass repair, landscaping, drink mixing, animal husbandry, massage therapy, homeopathy, organized sports, agriculture, military training, medicine, sewing, art, woodworking, information technologies, language, retail clothing, and ping pong are also highly desirable traits.

There is a steady stream of people from all walks of life coming to stay with us as guests, friends, and staff. We look for applicants who demonstrate a genuine interest in the country of Nicaragua, the sport of surfing, are engaged, open minded, and have some experience in a communal living situation.

Giant's Foot Surf Nicaragua has been lucky enough to attract intelligent, easy going people to it as both guests and members of our staff. That's what makes it such a fun place to be. We try to assess who will make the best all around additions to the camp. The base model of camp staff operates like a family. It isn't a large place and we live in fairly close quarters so you need to get along with everyone like family, because it is a fun, easy going, family environment into which we want to welcome our guests.

A rundown of what a basic package tour
with Giant's Foot Surf Nicaragua looks like.

To start, we either pick up our guests at the airport ourselves (ability to drive stick is helpful as we do not have any vehicles with automatic transmissions), or if the number of guests is too large we contract out to a tour bus company. Ditto for the drop off. Managua is where most folks fly in to, which is 2 & 1/2 hours away from Gigante.

The guests arrive and after being shown their rooms usually get straight into the water. We run up to three trips out to the various breaks a day based on the guest's wants, though the surf guides decide where they go based on conditions. Some guys are older and only want a session maybe two if it's amazing; others are hardcore and are out there three times daily. When not surfing, the guests hang out around the camp--it is a remote place with no tourist infrastructure yet, so there are no quaint cafes, tourist shops, nor is there really much of a village to walk around in and see the sights. A lot of any job at camp is hanging out with the guests, whether watching surf videos or initiating a hike up the headland on a particularly crummy day of surf, or just sitting around and letting them pick your brain about life in Nicaragua or life in general. We serve three meals daily, as well as a pre-dawn patrol coffee/cereal nosh, which are served buffet style and which everyone eats at the same time. We also run a full service bar in the evenings though currently it is open only to our camp.

A note on the area

We are pretty isolated, which is what makes our paradise so wonderful, but can also wear on folks who are used to being connected to family and friends on a regular basis. We do not have either phone or internet access at camp, so all communication must be done in town (Rivas which is 45 minutes away). You will of course be given opportunities to go into town as well as days off but it is super important that you are aware that this is in no way a daily occurrence. I don't mean to sound scary only many folks have arrived and not realized just what we mean by remote.

We try not to take ourselves too seriously, but...seriously, we work pretty hard. The compensation is that we also play hard. They don't call us the fun patrol for nothing!
